Travel Guide for Vermont
With the slender Lake Champlain marking its western boundary with New York State, the sluggish Connecticut River defining its eastern border, and the shaggy Green Mountains forming its backbone, Vermont always warrant something worthy of stopping off in the vast wilderness and pedestrian-friendly back-country burgs.

The Green Mountain State is rural and romantic. It is quaint and quiet. It's very much everything you think a New England state should be.

From the rolling cattle pastures to the meandering back country roads, from the clapboard farm houses and red grain silos to the covered bridged and which church steeples and lighthouses, from the cute Vermont country stores to the handsome Vermont bed and breakfasts, from the springtime maple syrup production to the fiery explosion of colors in the fall foliage seasons, Vermont offers visitors ample opportunities to see, touch and taste its love affairs with unique New England trades and traditions.

Fall foliage and winter ski vacation are in the heart of Vermont tourist industry. For the rest of the year, the relaxing treats of scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities and the adventurous extravaganza of outdoor pastime possibilities might as well worthy of an exploration.

The wooded hills of Vermont would start bursting into brilliant colors in late September in the north of the state and come to its peak around the first or second week of October.

If you're planning your leaf-peeping vacation in Vermont, head south down Hwy-100 or I-91, that are linking towns on or near either edge of the Green Mountains, or the Long Trail and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail which thread through the Green Mountain crests.

Note that New England weather is notoriously unpredictable, so pack warm clothing and an umbrella. Expect the biggest crowd at the Columbus Day weekend. And do make reservations of hotels in Vermont as early as possible. Lodging options in Vermont during this period of time, including national chain Vermont hotels, motels, country inns and charming independent Vermont bed and breakfasts, fill up really fast.

Ski resorts of extraordinary caliber make a Vermont ski vacation an absolute must for winter sport enthusiasts. Some of the world-class Vermont ski resorts, including Killington Resort in Killington, Suicide Six Ski Area in Woodstock, and Stowe Mountain Resort in Stowe, would offer special Vermont ski vacation packages ranging from basic adventures on the slopes like cross-country and downhill skiing to full-blown winter vacation experiences consisting of luxurious Vermont ski resort lodging, fantastic feast on local specialties at on-site eateries, and many sights to behold and activities to enjoy all within walking distance.

Being the last territory in New England to be settled, the only state in this region without any Atlantic coastline, and the first in the world to ratify a constitution prohibiting slavery and granting universal male suffrage, Vermont offerings a host of unique things to see and do that are in tune with its hard-worn reputation as a place with a mind of its own.

Standing testimony to its distinction as a place onto itself are the feisty independent-minded Vermonters and its scenic sober communities,

Vermonters, widely defined by liberal social-consciousness and conservative financial outlook, know where their towns begin and end. The distinct sense of community and shared culture has steadfastly resisted encroachment of the maddening American mania and erosion of identity that so many other small towns on the East Coast has been experiencing in the process of being swallowed up by sprawling megalopolises.

All Vermont cities manage a solid population of no more than forty thousand.

Burlington comes close to maybe Vermont's only urban scene, whose major tourist attraction being the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum & Historic Site, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory in Waterbury, Lake Champlain Ferry rides, University of Vermont, Discover Jazz Festival in June and Church Street Marketplace.

There are many reliable Burlington Vermont hotels positioned just off of Main Street overlooking the sparkling Lake Champlain, and several Vermont bed and breakfasts as well. There are also a variety of independently owned and operated country inns and bed and breakfasts on the Ethan Allen Highway.

Outside of town, national hotel chains, as well as some of the choicest resort lodging options, like the Inn at Essex resort in Essex Junction, dot the surrounding roadside communities starting from the Champlain Valley villages to hamlets in the Green Mountain National Forest and the state capital Montpelier.

On your way south, don't miss the Shelburne Museum, the Shelburne Farm, The Vermont Teddy Bear Company in Shelburne, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Basin Harbor, Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh, UVM Morgan Horse Farm in Middlebury, the New England Maple Museum & Maple Market in Pittsford, the Wilson Castle and VT Marble Exhibit in Proctor, Wobbly Barn and Green Mountain National Golf Course in Killington, Norman Rockwell Museum of Vermont and Vermont State Fair (September) in Rutland, the historic Hildene estate in Manchester, and the Bennington Museum, Bennington Battle Monument, Bennington Covered Bridge Museum in Bennington.

Determined to explore southeast along I-89? Don't leave out Cold Hollow Cider Mill and the Ben and Jerry's in Waterbury, Camp Meade Victory Museum and History Theme Park in Middlesex, Mad River Glen ski area near Waitsfield, Sugarbush ski area near Warren, Vermont State House and Morse Farm & Sugar House in Montpelier, Norwich University Military Museum in Northfield, Rock of Ages in Barre, National Historic Mill Village in Quechee, President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site in Plymouth and Sugarbush Farm, Billings Farm and Museum, and Marsh - Billings - Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock.

Elsewhere, there are Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and Art Gallery, and the Original Maple Grove Museum and Factory to be found in and near St. Johnsbury in the northeast of the state.

In the rural nonwestern Vermont, there is the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in Swanton, the Vermont Maple Outlet in Jeffersonville, Vermont Maple Festival (April) in St. Albans, and the picturesque string of Lake Champlain islands where you'll find St. Anne's Shrine on Isle La Motte, Herrmann's Royal Lipizzan Stallions of Austria in North Hero, and the Grand Isle State Fish Culture Station, Hyde Log Cabin and Lake Champlain Ferry rides on Grand Isle,

The city of Brattleboro is to be found in the southeast corner of the state, whose signature attractions include Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, Tom and Sally's Handmade Chocolate, and a wide variety of sporting and recreation action revolving around the West and Connecticut rivers.

Wherever your Vermont vacation itinerary takes you, rest assured there would be outstanding Vermont hotels, motels, country inns, bed and breakfasts and resorts to make traveling there memorable and would surely encourage you to return time and again.
