Saskatchewan Travel Guide
Easy travel in Saskatchewan- comprehensive guide to what to see, what to do, and where to stay in Saskatchewan.

With the northern half devoted almost entirely to remote wilderness and designated provincial and national parks, and the rolling prairies of the south concealing gems of topographic nuances, historical curiosities, superb urban diversions and diverting small towns, Saskatchewan has just about everything visitors might look forward to in a tourist destination. The majority of Saskatchewan accommodations suitable for city-slickers, like Regina Saskatchewan hotels and hotels in Saskatoon, are found dominating the Trans-Canada and Yellowhead Highway corridors in the south. The outdoors type can resort to camping-style Saskatchewan accommodations in and around the provincial and national parks in the north. ...

Travel Guide for Saskatchewan
Located in the middle of Canadian Prairie provinces with golden blankets of wheat and barley extending as far as the eye can see under the constant shadow of fast moving clouds, Saskatchewan is crushingly rural and picturesque.

The undeserved stereotype of this land of living skies as some entirely flat and featureless tracts of farmland is yet grossly unfair, at least not doing any justice to the its well-earned nickname, the "province of 100,000 lakes", the vast majority of which, along with expanses of sand dunes, bogs, crisscross network of rivers and streams and thickets of boreal forests, are to be found in the northern half of the province, not to mention the topographic nuances, historical curiosities, superb urban diversions and diverting small towns concealed in the mellow landscape of the south.

One of the laid-back province's best features is its pleasant remoteness.

The largely still untouched landscape of the north is nothing more than the remote wilderness and designated provincial and national parks consisting of wide-open natural habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, with the spin-offs of some wonderful camping, canoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, fishing and hunting opportunities for anyone who loves the great outdoors.

The Lake Athabasca Sand Dunes, the World's largest active sand dunes north of 58?? with Woodland Cree colonies nearby in the extreme northwest corner of the province, the Prince Albert National Park with the only free-range herd of Plains bison in all of Canadian national parks, the rich fishing grounds of the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park, along with its direct access to the Churchill River, one of the World's best canoe routes, plus Meadow Lake Provincial Park's vast diversity of habitat the and Narrow Hills Provincial Park's year-round backpacking opportunities, this portion of the province definitely should be near the top of your list of places to resort to.

In terms of Saskatchewan accommodations in the northern half, rest assured this region has just about everything one might look forward to for a comfortable overnight stay for your wilderness adventure.

There are numerous campsites, ranging from fully serviced to rustic sites, in the many provincial and national parks.

In Waskesiu Lake, the most developed community within the boundaries of the Prince Albert National Park, you can choose from a typical tourists' choice of Saskatchewan accommodations, including star-rated chain hotels in Saskatchewan, budget Saskatchewan hotels and motels and Saskatchewan bed and breakfast inns.

Log cabins and lodges are one of the far north Saskatchewan accommodations' special features, some of them so remote that you have to fly in.

You don't feel crowded at all in the well-developed cities, including the provincial capital city of Regina and Saskatoon, the largest city in the province.

Both rising up in the middle of the prairies, with low-profile skyline, well-groomed streets and communities in town and rolling wheat fields surrounding, Regina and Saskatoon highlight prairie folk's love affair with fresh air and wide-open space.

Regina, in particular, understands that fact perfectly, as the 2298-acre Wascana Centre Park attests.

As one of the largest urban parks in the entire continent, Wascana Centre boasts numerous shady trees, picnicking lawns between great walking path, the Wascana Lake which has its own islands as well as some of the most notable cultural sites and attractions in Regina, like the Saskatchewan Science Centre, Kramer IMAX Theatre, Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Saskatchewan Legislative Building, MacKenzie Art Gallery and the Saskatchewan Centre for the Arts.

As Canada's only training academy for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Regina also boasts the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Centennial Museum, which was absorbed into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Heritage Centre since May 23, 2007.

Chances to watch the Sergeant Major's Parade, which occurs Mon to Fri at 12:50pm, and the Sunset Retreat Ceremony, which takes place during July and August, are also available to further your understanding of the proud tradition and story of the RCMP.

The fantastic Casino Regina is also among the better known attractions in the city. Hopefully you'll win a bit of money and enjoy some equally fantastic shopping in the pedestrian friendly Old Warehouse District, or one of the brash shopping malls like the Cornwall Center, the Southland Mall, Golden Mile Shopping Centre, the Normanview Mall or the Victoria Square Shopping Center.

There is a mix of lodging options in a variety of settings in Regina. Ranging from four star Regina Saskatchewan hotels, such as Radisson Plaza Hotel Saskatchewan and the Delta Regina Hotel, to no-frill motels and bed and breakfasts, like the Super 8 Motel and the Dragon's Nest, and everything in-between, Regina Saskatchewan hotels and other accommodations would always have a room to accommodate your needs and budget.

If you plan to call at town during CFL season, when the Saskatchewan Roughriders play their home games played at Mosaic Stadium, or one of the annual events, like the Buffalo Days in August, remember to book Regina Saskatchewan hotels well in advance.

Picturesquely straddling the South Saskatchewan River, Saskatoon is understandably known as a City of Bridges. Named after the Saskatoon berry that grows along the river and established itself with its preeminent agricultural influence, Saskatoon is the surprisingly unlikely home of Canada's only synchrotron, "The Canadian Light Source", which is housed at the University of Saskatchewan.

There are some great places to learn some history and culture, like the Wanuskewin Heritage Park for North American Plains Indians tradition, Saskatoon Western Development Museum, where visitors find themselves on Main St Prairie Boomtown in the year 1910, the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, a museum, archives and research centre also housed in the University of Saskatchewan, the Mendel Art Gallery and Civic Conservatory, the Ukranian Museum of Canada, the Saskatchewan Railway Museum, and so on.

For some leisurely recreation or entertainment fun, check out Saskatoon's Kinsmen Park, Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo, Dakota Dunes Golf Links, Saskatchewan International Raceway, the Northern Saskatchewan International Children's Festival in June, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan in July and August, and Saskatoon International Fringe Festival in August.

Hotels in Saskatoon have a comfortable bed for you to sleep on wherever your journey takes you.

From the excessive extras of landmark downtown hotels in Saskatoon where you can splurge on, like the Hilton Garden Inn and the Delta Bessborough, to the sufficient basics of hotels in Saskatoon's outlying areas for an incredible value for money, like the Days Inn and the Best Western near the John G. Diefenbaker International airport, hotels in Saskatoon are profusely ready to make your family vacation and business trip a successful one.

Major transport hubs on major highways in the province, like Moose Jaw and Swift Current on the Trans-Canada Highway, which runs across the southern portion of the province (including Regina), and Yorkton and North Battleford, linked with Saskatoon via the Yellowhead Highway, are also worthwhile stops.

Take a dip into the hot mineral spring treatment offered by Temple Gardens Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw, to release the tension of your muscles you stiffened perusing exhibits at the Western Development Museum and taking the one-hour tour of the Tunnel of Moose Jaw, the secret passage used by the legendary Al Capone and other Prohibition bootleggers as well as the Chinese immigrants, and get yourself ready for your likely lucky night on the tables of the Casino Moose Jaw, or that of the Painted Hand Casino in Yorkton.

North Battleford's Heritage Farm and Village and Battlefords Wildlife Federation Nature Centre, Swift Current's Mennonite Heritage Village, Art Gallery of Swift Current, and Swift Current Museum would offer some enjoyable diversions while you're stopping by on your road.
