Travel Guide for Arkansas
Located on the eastern edge of the American frontier, marking the beginning of the Great Plains, Arkansas beckons with limitless possibilities for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Once a rough-and-ready wasteland comprised mainly of alluvial lowlands prone to flooding and cragged mountain ranges blotted out by virgin forests, Arkansas, The Natural State, is the tried and true natural destination with a great deal of variety and a wealth of good value to look after your wonderful vacation.

With its real charm and true identity lying in its sheer natural beauty, which is showcased in the multi-faceted tapestry of magnificent mountain crests, craggy ridges, broadleaf forests, dramatic waterfalls, crystal lakes, clear mountain streams, plentiful game and fish areas, and mysterious caverns, Arkansas is the place to slow down and enjoy the idiosyncratic leisurely pace of life, and work up a little bit and take full advantage of nature's bounty in the great outdoors.

There are 6 federal preserves and 51 state parks designated to preserve the natural, historical and cultural aspects of Arkansas' rich heritage, most notably the Arkansas Post National Memorial, founded around the state's first European settlement, Hot Springs National Park, the oldest in the National Park System, and Crater of Diamonds State Park, the world's one and only diamond mine open to the public, along with well-groomed hiking and mountain biking trails and well-stocked hunting and fishing sites.

You can also escape into the Ozark National Forest, which boasts Mount Magazine, Arkansas' tallest peak, the Hall Creek Falls, the Blanchard Springs Caverns, Devil's Den State Park, and the Ozark Highlands Trail, or the Ouachita National Forest, highlights of which include the Beavers Bend Resort Park, Broken Bow Lake, and the Ouachita National Recreation Trail.

Elsewhere, Buffalo National River cannot be beat for kayaking and rafting, the Pea Ridge National Military Park depicts one of the major military encounters during the Civil War, the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site gives some insights into 1957 desegregation crisis, et al.

Arkansas is also restorative in the sense that it boasts abundant resources of mineral water with therapeutic qualities. Just take a dip at one of the thermal springs in Eureka Springs in the Ouachita Mountains region, and in Hot Springs in the Ozark Mountains region.

The Natural State is also known in part for its culinary treats using local ingredients. Whether you're craving for trout fresh-caught from Bull Shoals Lake or the White River, great Arkansas barbecue of the slightly sweet tomato based or heavily spicy mustard sauced, the heaping helpings of variously prepared poultry, fried, baked or roasted in soups, salads, sandwiches, homemade yeast rolls and cornbread paired with a glass of Arkansas wine, or ethnic restaurants serving cuisines from all over the globe, you can always find a place to please your palate.

Further bolsters up Arkansas' distinction as an up-and-coming vacationland is its four distinctive yet mild seasons. Featuring hot and humid summers and slightly drier and moderate winters, with reasonable snow, Arkansas has a typical subtropical climate. Pay attention to the occasional weather extremes, especially the tornado season in the spring.

What catapults the Natural State's reputation into national prominence is its status as the home state of Bill Clinton. There are four Arkansas cities laying claim to this 42nd president of the United States: his birthplace in Hope, the boyhood home in Hot Springs, the wedding site in Fayetteville, and his former office in Little Rock, the state capital, along with the specially designated Clinton Presidential Center and Park in the historic River Market District with the largest collection of the US presidential archives.

There are of course more than just presidency-related attractions in theses destinations. Little Rock alone, entices and entertains every member of the family, with the grand Arkansas State Capitol, Old State House Museum, Historic Arkansas Museum, Little Rock Zoo, Arkansas Arts Center, Children's Museum of Arkansas, Museum of Discovery, and the September pageant of Riverfest in the Julius Breckling Riverfront Park.

Hope's Watermelon Festival in August, Fayetteville's Arkansas Air Museum, the University of Arkansas and its legendary Arkansas Razorbacks football team, Hot Spring's bathhouses-thronged Bathhouse Row, Mid-America Science Museum, Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo, Magic Springs/Crystal Fall theme park, and the effervescent Arkansas Oktoberfest and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival in October are also delightful offerings worthy of checking out.

When the time to call it a night draws near, rest assured Arkansas hotels in these popular tourist cities would suffice in relieving all your tensions. Contemporary hotels in Little Rock Arkansas, cozy Hot Springs Arkansas hotels and resorts, or quaint Arkansas hotels and motels, bed and breakfasts and country inns in smaller towns- the choice is yours!

The concept of southern hospitality also extends to hotels in Arkansas' other hot spots, like Fort Smith, a showcase town of Old West flavor, Murfreesboro, the gateway to the Crater of Diamonds State Park, and Eureka Springs.

Of all these hotels in Arkansas, Eureka Springs Arkansas hotels win over, thanks to the city's magic mineral water cures, and family friendly activities and attractions like Dinosaur World and Mysteries of Magic Shows May through October, Great Passion Play outdoor drama and a summer Blues Festival.
